A terrific Instagram post from Lewisville ISD:
In a partnership between Lewisville ISD, the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA), the City of Lewisville, the Army Corps of Engineers and the University of North Texas, 7th grade students in LISD have had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with prairie conservation efforts in our region.
During this “field experience,” students learn and support best practices in environmental restoration, research, education and recreation through a trail hike, wildlife observations, habitat assessments and more.
Recently, students from Killian Middle School participated in the 2024 Plant-a-Thon event, an annual tradition and competition between LISD middle schools at LLELA. Killian won the 2023 Plant-a-Thon Cup for planting the most plants and having the best conservation spirit!
With the help of LLELA Conservation Director Richard Freiheit, and master naturalists, LISD 7th graders have planted thousands of native prairie plants in designated restoration areas during four years of participation in the Plant-a-Thon!
