Wildflower Trails of the LBJ National Grassland

Our guest speaker is Jerry Hamby, a treasured LLELA volunteer who also lends his expertise to plant surveys and more at LBJ National Grasslands, located northwest of Fort Worth near Decatur.  Jerry has hiked in more than 20 of the 78 units that make up the grassland. During those visits, he’s uploaded more than 2,400 observations on iNaturalist, representing 463 (mostly native) species. His presentation will consist of three parts: a description of the ecosystems that comprise the LBJ National Grassland, a tour of a few locations where people can find native plants, and a look at some of the most unusual wildflowers.

Jerry Hamby is a member of the Elm Fork Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist program. He completed his initial training with the Gulf Coast Chapter in Houston where he lived before moving to North Texas in 2021. He monitors bluebird nest boxes at the LBJ National Grassland and serves as Project Manager for the Adopt-a-Loop project, which documents iNaturalist and eBird observations on TPWD’s Great Texas Wildlife Trails. He is also participating in a tree inventory for the City of Lewisville sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. The goal of this extensive project is to identify tag and assess every tree in Lewisville’s public spaces. This work is being accomplished by members of the Citizen Forester Program, which provides volunteer service for the Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council.
