Your North Texas Giving Day donations will create a roadside prairie — Thur. Sept. 19

August 26 - September 19

Create an inviting roadside prairie at LLELA!

Give through North Texas Giving Day, now through Thur. Sept. 19

Imagine the main road at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) flanked with native wildflowers. What a greeting!

With your North Texas Giving Day support, Friends of LLELA plans to turn the 1.5 mile expanse from the entrance to the Elm Fork into a linear prairie. Fifteen acres of beautiful year-long color will be a thrill to view!

HOW WE’LL DO IT

It’s a big task! Necessary modifications to the Lewisville Lake dam impacted this stretch of E. Jones St. Friends of LLELA must first control exotic plant species along the road and then prepare the soil for seeding. However, our crew has deep experience with other prairie restoration at LLELA.

Then we will seed the roadsides with a diverse prairie seed mix containing a higher-than-normal amount of wildflower seeds. To anchor the project, healthy plants from LLELA’s native plant nursery will be installed throughout.

Your North Texas Giving Day donations will help purchase seeds and other essential materials needed to convert this grassy strip of land into a diverse prairie ecosystem. GIVE HERE.

WHY WE’LL DO IT

Aside from the glorious color and pollinator support, birds and wildlife will benefit from the flower and seed production and find shelter in the robust greenery. This project will be a great opportunity for visitors to see the abundant life contained in a relatively small strip of land. We hope this conversion will be a model for future projects in surrounding communities, allowing people can see the wonderful benefits an easement or roadside prairie can provide.

MORE ABOUT US

Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) is the 2,600 acre “Green Centerpiece” of Lewisville located just south of Lewisville Lake. This hidden gem of nature is leased from the US Army Corps of Engineers and managed by the University of North Texas, the City of Lewisville, and the Lewisville ISD.

Friends of LLELA, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, supports the operation of LLELA through community events, fundraising for essential projects, and raising the awareness of LLELA as an asset to the community and surrounding area.

North Texas Giving Day on Thur. Sept. 19 from Communities Foundation of Texas is an online giving extravaganza for our region. But early giving is available now. MAKE YOUR GIFT ONLINE. Funds raised support our mission to preserve and restore LLELA ecosystems and biodiversity while providing opportunities for environmental education, research, and recreation.
